Taking breaks and finishing things

I finally found some inspiration to start writing the first entry to my new blog!

Some of you know that I’m taking a break from social media (or at least trying to) for a few weeks. The first couple of days were weird, since instead of scrolling forever through the lives of other people I found myself without knowing what to do with all my new free time. I must admit I felt bored and a little bit embarrassed to be feeling "withdrawal symptoms" from my "addiction" to screens. Now I’m getting in a new routine and life seems to be fun again. Yey!

The news is that I finally finished my mural in Roeland Park! In total it’s been a month worth of work to cover a 8 x 40 foot wall - my biggest and most elaborate mural so far. I’m grateful I could to do some art for the city in which my family (on my husband’s side) has lived for decades, and I hope it can make many people smile in the years to come.

During the first days of painting the mural - now I can confess - I really didn’t know what I was doing of if I was going to be able to do a good job with this project. I started by sketching my design with pale yellow paint and then drawing more precisely with some brown-reddish color. I had to erase and re-sketch a few times before achieving the result I liked. Something that I have learned over the years is that if you mess up the sketch at the beginning and don’t correct it before continuing your work, it will bother you forever - it’s much better to take the time and do it right from the beginning instead of dragging the problem for days and days.

One of the things that concerned me from working right next to a road is all the cars/people passing by all the time. I felt very exposed, and even though most people would say nice things about my painting (and just one guy asked me out) I was grateful to be working along with other wonderful artists instead of doing it alone. Collaborating with them was beautiful and I can’t wait to do it again!

I did all this mural just using eco-friendly paints and second hand art supplies. For all the murals I painted before I tried to be careful and not waste materials, but I never had the chance to choose the supplies I wanted to use. Even though the paints I got this time were a bit more expensive than regular ones and I paid them from my own pocket, I can have the peace of mind of knowing that I did my best to make it sustainable.

Now that I’ve finished this big project I’m starting to think about what I want to do next. I already decided that I want to take a break from doing markets and sales, so it’s time to concentrate on doing things that I’ve been meaning to do for a while. I got a book called Mystical Stitches by Christi Johnson which teaches different symbols that can be applied to embroidery designs and that I’m looking forward to explore more. I want to go back to some sewing projects since I won’t be able to use my machine while I’m traveling in the next few weeks, and I want to play much more music. These are all things that don’t make me any money, but which I deeply enjoy. For the last few months it’s been really difficult for me to separate the things that I do to make a living and the things that I do because I love. After all, I have chose to make a living out of my passion, which is a great gift, but that sometimes makes me forget about why I started doing art in the first place - because it makes me happy.

¡Finalmente encontré un poco de inspiración para comenzar a escribir la primera entrada de mi nuevo blog! Algunos de ustedes saben que estoy tomando un descanso de las redes sociales (o al menos lo estoy intentando) durante unas semanas. Los primeros días fueron raros, ya que en lugar de estar pendiente de las vidas de otras personas y las últimas noticias, me encontré sin saber qué hacer con todo mi nuevo tiempo libre. Debo admitir que durante los primeros días me sentí bastante aburrida y hasta con un poco de vergüenza al ver cómo mis dedos mecánicamente hacían click en las aplicaciones de las que pretendo descansar. Por suerte ahora estoy empezando a adoptar una nueva rutina y la vida parece volver a ser divertida. ¡Yey! ¡La noticia es que finalmente terminé mi mural en Roeland Park! En total ha sido un mes de trabajo para cubrir una pared de 2.5 x 12 metros: mi mural más grande y elaborado hasta ahora. Estoy agradecida de poder hacer un poco de arte para la ciudad en la que mi familia (del lado de mi esposo) ha vivido durante décadas, y espero que pueda hacer sonreír a muchas personas en los próximos años.

Durante los primeros días de pintar el mural, ahora puedo confesarlo, realmente no sabía qué estaba haciendo o si iba a poder hacer un buen trabajo con este proyecto. Comencé esbozando mi diseño con pintura de color amarilla y luego dibujando con mayor precisión con un color marrón rojizo. Tuve que borrar y volver a dibujar varias veces antes de lograr el resultado que me gustaba. Algo que he aprendido a lo largo de los años es que si estropeas el boceto al principio y no lo corriges antes de continuar con tu trabajo, te molestará para siempre; es mucho mejor tomarse el tiempo y hacerlo bien desde el principio en lugar de arrastrar el problema durante días y días.

Una de las cosas que me preocupaba de trabajar justo al lado de una carretera son todos los autos / personas que pasan todo el tiempo. Me sentí muy expuesta, y aunque la mayoría de la gente decía cosas agradables sobre mi pintura (y sólo un chico me invitó a salir), me sentí agradecida de trabajar junto con otros artistas maravillosos en lugar de hacerlo sola. Colaborar con ellos fue hermoso y no puedo esperar para hacerlo de nuevo.

Todo este mural lo pinté usando pinturas ecológicas y materiales de arte de segunda mano. Para todos los murales que pinté antes intenté tener cuidado y no desperdiciar materiales, pero nunca tuve la oportunidad de elegir el tipo de pintura que quería usar. Aunque las pinturas que conseguí esta vez eran un poco más caras que las normales y las pagué de mi propio bolsillo, puedo tener la tranquilidad de saber que hice todo lo posible para que este mural fuera sostenible.

Ahora que he terminado este gran proyecto, empiezo a pensar en lo que quiero hacer a continuación. Ya decidí que quiero tomar un descanso de los mercados y las ventas, así que ahora es el momento de concentrarme en hacer las cosas que he querido hacer hace ya un tiempo. Conseguí un libro llamado Mystical Stitches de Christi Johnson que enseña diferentes símbolos que se pueden aplicar a diseños de bordado y que estoy deseando explorar más. Quiero retomar algunos proyectos de costura ya que no podré usar mi máquina mientras estoy de viaje en las próximas semanas y también quiero tocar mucha más música. Todas estas son cosas que no me hacen ganar dinero, pero que disfruto profundamente. Durante los últimos meses ha sido muy difícil para mí separar las cosas que hago para vender y las que hago porque amo hacerlas. Después de todo, elegí ganarme la vida dedicándome a mi pasión, lo cual es un gran regalo, pero que a veces me hace olvidar por qué comencé a hacer arte en primer lugar: simplemente porque me hace feliz.
